If you have built a new pool and spa, then you know it’s a great way to cool off on the sweltering summer days in southwest Florida.
To enjoy the sun responsibly, it’s essential to use sunscreen. It doesn’t matter if you think you don’t burn – everyone is affected by UV radiation. According to SkinCancer.org, both UVA and UVB rays are dangerous to the skin, and can induce skin cancer, including melanoma. Blistering sunburns in early childhood increase risk, but cumulative exposure also may be a factor. People who live in locations that have more sunlight — like Florida, Hawaii, and Australia — develop more skin cancers.
The best way to protect yourself is by…
…limiting your exposure. Stay out of the sun completely in the hours around noon. When you are in the sun, always use a minimum SPF (sun protection factor) of 30. Don’t be stingy! Use a lot and be sure to cover all areas of the body. Don’t forget your ears, hands and feet.
Be sure that all children know the rule, that you MUST use sunscreen before the pool and spa. Most of the damage from UV rays is
done between the ages of 0 and 18.
Many doctors recommend applying sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure. The sunscreen needs time to be absorbed.
But you aren’t finished when the sunscreen is on. You must reapply throughout the day to ensure protection.
It’s also recommended that you wear a hat and sunglasses. Your eyes are also sensitive to UV rays! Being around a reflective surface (like the water from your pool), strengthens the effect of the sun’s rays, so you really must be careful.
When purchasing a sunscreen, look for one that offers both UVA and UVB protection. It will be labeled “broad spectrum”. Also look for one without any harsh chemicals that can be absorbed by your skin. Try some of the following organic and/or natural brands:
- Sweetsation Therapy
- Goddess Garden
- California Baby
- All Terrain
