Cool Pools - No Mosquitos

This is the 13th installment of “14 Ways to Make a Splash with Pool Safety which is available as a Free download from our eBook library.

Unfortunately, buggy summers are a reality for most of us in southwest Florida. Mosquitoes, gnats and no-see-ums can turn your pleasant pool dreams into a nightmare. How can you reclaim your favorite pool space without these pesky bugs?

Applying bug spray directly to the skin is a bad idea, as it will wash off with the first splash of your cool pools water. This leaves you unprotected, and adds the nasty chemicals of the bug spray into your pool.

14 Ways to Make a Splash With Pool SafetyThere are better solutions. Consider using insect repellant candles around your pool area. Citronella is a mosquito repellant that’s available in various forms: as lotions, sprays and candles. The candles – when carefully placed to avoid contact with children or animals – can help. A university study showed that people near citronella candles had about 40% fewer bites than those with no protection.

Some people don’t like the smell of those candles, however. In that case, try the “Skeeter Eater”. It’s an effective way to control mosquitoes. The chamber of the Skeeter Eater emits a plume of carbon dioxide, heat and moisture. That’s the siren song for mosquitoes and other biting insects. When combined with an additional attractant, the bugs fly into the trap. This keeps your pool area (and the surrounding acre) protected from these pests. It’s convenient because it works 24 hours a day, even when you aren’t using your cool pools.
