Solar Pool Heater

This is the fifth of 7 Ways to Save on Your New Pool which is available for free from our library of eBooks.

Soak up the sun and enjoy the warm savings!

If you’re like most, you probably like your pool temperature to be around 80 degrees. If you have been following my blog, Ultimate Swimming Pool & Spa, I talked about the joy of swimming year round by installing an electric pool heater. This is another option to enjoy your newly constructed pool any time of the year.

The initial installation of a solar water heater will be slightly more expensive than traditional pool heater options, however the cost is soon justified as you enjoy the benefits of low electric bills and minimal maintenance.

The simplest and least expensive solar water heater is the solar pool heater. Here’s how it works:

  • Pool water is pumped through the filter
  • The water continues through the solar collector
  • Water is heated while in the solar collectors
  • Water returns to the pool

Once the pool temperature and the solar collector temperature are similar, filtered water bypasses the collector and is simply returned to the pool. Normally, the collectors raise the water temperature between 5°F – 10°F from the inlet to the outlet.

Collectors transfer most of the solar energy they absorb directly to the water, often operating at efficiencies 80% and higher. On 7 Ways to Save on Your New Poolhot summer days, a solar water heater operates so closely to the air temperature that hardly any heat is lost into the environment. In warmer climates, the solar collectors can even be used to cool the pool during peak summer months by circulating the water through the solar collector at night.

Some solar systems include sensors and an automatic or manual valve to divert water through the collector(s) when the collector temperature is sufficiently greater than the pool temperature. That’s pool automation at it’s best!

By the way, if you ever decide that pool maintenance just isn’t your cup of tea, our team is available to fulfill all of your pool care needs. We’ll even give you one month of pool service for free when you refer us to others.
