Right now, there’s 3 storms brewing – Nate, Katia and Maria.  Yep…

It’s hurricane season in Florida!

One of the biggest questions we get this time of year (especially when a storm is tracking directly toward Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Naples – our service areas!) is:

“What do I need to do to assure my pool, and pool area, are safe if the storm hits?”

Here’s our official Pool Pros, Inc. guide to:

Pool Preparation for a Storm

  1. Assure all loose items (chairs, tables, toys, any other furniture) are stored indoors, out of the wind.
  2. Drop the water level in your pool about a foot, especially if you don’t have overflow drains.  The water level in your pool provides important weight to hold the sides and bottom in place – especially with the heavy rains that are associated with most tropical storms and hurricanes and raise the local water table.
  3. Never empty your pool – in some cases, pools that have been emptied have had serious structural problems and have even been lifted off of their foundations.
  4. Turn off all electric power at the circuit breakers before the storm hits.
  5. Although you can put plastic or PVC based furniture in your pool to shield if from wind (we really don’t recommend that, unless you have no other options, and your pool isn’t vinyl or fiberglass) never put any metal or glass items in your pool – it’s almost impossible to locate remove broken glass in a pool without completely draining it.

If you have any questions about preparing your pool for a storm, be sure to contact us, or give us a call at (239) 277-7783.

Let’s hope we stay out of the paths of the tropical storms and hurricanes this season! 😉
